Bioinformatics Virtual Lab I

Bioinformatics is a field which using techniques of informatics to gather, store, analyse and integrate biological data. This virtual lab is an introductory course for undergraduate students and deals with the storage and retrieval of data from different biological databases like Gene, Pubmed, GEO, TAIR, Prosite etc.

Retrieving sequence data from Entrez
Entrez is an integrated information search and retrieval system for biological databases from NCBI.
Locating the chromosome of a Gene
Retrieving the gene information of an organism using NCBI's Gene database.
Retrieve gene expression data from GEO
Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) is an online resource for the retrieval of gene expression and hybridization array data.
Retrieving articles using PubMed
PubMed is centralized NCBI repository for access to millions of articles which can be accessed through a web based interface provided within NCBI.
Finding ORF of a Given Sequence
The ORF finder is a program that identifies all open reading frames or the possible protein coding region in a sequence.
Retrieving structural data of a protein using PDB database
PDB is a protein database that contains the information about 3-D structure of proteins.
Retrieving Motif Information of a Protein Using Prosite
The Prosite database helps to identify the possible functions of a new sequence from the existing sequence.
Retrieving Gene Information from TAIR database
TAIR Database stores the information about annotations on gene structure, gene/protein functional and metabolic pathway.
Designing a primer
To design a primer for a given sequence.
