Fiber Optic Analog and Digital Link

The entire setup with proper connections has been depicted as follows:-

Scientech Fiber Optic Trainer kit is used to perform this particular experiment. It allows the choice of transmitting a 1KHz square wave and up to 1KHz of sine wave using a Fiber-Optic cable. The Fiber-Optic cables one end is fixed to the transmitter port and the other end is fixed to the receiver port after which, sinewave is passed through the amplifier and square wave is passed through the comparator and the original signal is received at the output port.

It is used to generate seemingly random sequences at a given data rate clock. The purpose of this module is to nearly emulate conditions of real time data. Two options are provided onboard for the sequence length via a jumper:

Short Sequence

This is a Modulo-4 PRBS sequence. Modulo-4 implies a 15 bit long random sequence, i.e. (2^[4] - 1). The reason for putting an option of a short sequence in PRBS generation is for the ease of comparatively observing demodulated data versus transmitted data.

Long Sequence

This is a Modulo-15 PRBS sequence. Modulo-15 implies a 32,767 bit long random sequence, i.e. (2^[15] - 1). The reason for putting an option of a long sequence in PRBS generation is to emulate conditions of randomness in real- time data, and showcase this feature to the students during experimentation. The square wave output (1KHz) from the Scientech Fiber-optic trainer kit has been used as the input to the PRBS and its output is fed to the transmitter of the trainer kit.

This Module comprises of a Power supply SMPS unit and a smart card set for easy distribution of power to the individual modules at the transmitter and the receiver end respectively.

NI ELVIS and Prototyping board is used to interface the Optical fiber trainer kit with computer. NI ELVIS board has got an oscilloscope, a function generator, DMM, variable power supply etc. In this experiment we have used the ELVIS oscilloscope (channel 0 for input waveform  and channel 1 for output wave form) and digital writer of the Prototyping board used as the switch to select either analog or digital link
